Advance Indigenous PHC and Policy Research Capacity through Critical Training and Mentorship Opportunities
Activities
i. Building capacity through individual agency (supporting trainees and researchers):
Indigenous graduate student mentorship stipends
experiential internships for undergraduate and graduate students in primary health care and policy research
research travel and dissemination bursary (including the National Gathering of Graduate Students Travel Bursary)
ii. Mentorship for self-determination, resilience, and wellness maintenance:
educational webinar series for undergraduate and graduate students in primary health care and policy research
land-based student gatherings
writing retreat
mentor development and mentor resource repository
iii. Develop, implement and measure educational approaches on PHC and policy research:
PHC research quarterly journal club
Research training for health care professional and community: Step 1 online research training modules and Step 2 research training workshop series
Outputs
i. 15 Indigenous graduate student mentorship stipends provided; 15 undergraduate experiential internships; 12 graduate experiential internships; trainee bursary competition procedure, notice and application forms.
ii. Summer series presentation materials; learner quality improvement and learning outcomes tools and data; land-based student gatherings prospectus, event summaries and student experience assessments; writing retreat prospectus, student experience assessments, 18 student placements in writing retreats, 4 academic mentors at writing retreats, 2 elders at writing retreats; mentor development presentations, workshop content and methods, mentor evaluation data.
iii. Core competencies; learning outcomes; learner assessment resource; learning content and methods quality improvement evaluation resource; journal club facilitation guide; yearly list of publications reviewed; modules prospectus; content for 6 modules; content and methods of each of 3 workshops; accreditation approved; certificate program approved; target 100 individuals completed modules; 36 individuals completed workshop series.
Outcomes
i. Trainees and researchers apply methods and approaches to Indigenous PHC and policy within their own research programs.
ii. Trainees and mentors gain capacity to apply Indigenous ethics and ways of knowing to their PHC and policy research endeavours.
iii. Emerging PHC providers, leads and policy makers build competence in Indigenous PHC and policy research; trainees engage, contribute to and eventually lead local research projects.
