In the context of the IPHCPR network, as of August 2022, we have shifted from the using the term “Shadow System” (as seen in this content and much of the literature about systems), to now using the term “Informal System”. For the purposes of learning content, they functionally mean the same thing.

Our hope is that by shifting this language, we can move towards recognizing the value and presence of the elements of the health experience that don’t fit within the Formal System. Aspects of what was referred to as Shadow system such as friends, family, and community do not operate in the background/shadows of a persons health journey, and are no less important to health and wellbeing than clinical care. Our chosen terminology change aims to reflect this belief.
